Descrizione del workshop
The Urge of Being – Expedition è un workshop residenziale e una ricerca performativa site-specific ideata da Daniela Marcozzi, artista performativa, regista e ricercatrice interdisciplinare, fondatrice di Marcozzi Contemporary Theater (Berlino) e dell’associazione culturale M.A.R.E. Movimento Artistico Ricerca Ecologica.
Il progetto nasce all’interno della pratica The Urge of Being, sviluppata negli ultimi dieci anni attraverso una ricerca che intreccia arti performative, ecologia, neuroscienze dell’embodiment e biologia delle emozioni.
Al centro del lavoro vi è il concetto di urge: una forza vitale e impulsiva che attraversa il corpo, orienta le nostre azioni e può diventare materia creativa, relazione e trasformazione.
Il workshop invita i partecipanti a esplorare la relazione tra urgenze personali e collettive, ecologiche, sociali e politiche, interrogandosi sul ruolo della performance come forma di ascolto, presenza e attivismo.
Il percorso si svilupperà tra lavoro in studio e pratiche site-specific a contatto con il territorio del fiume Po, in dialogo con gli spazi e la comunità locale.
Il workshop residenziale è ospitato dal Teatro Nucleo di Ferrara, e le performance site-specific sono parte di Totem Festival 2026.
Contenuti artistici
Il lavoro si basa sulla metodologia On Urgency, sviluppata da Daniela Marcozzi e Marcozzi Contemporary Theater, che consiste nella raccolta di testimonianze e questionari anonimi sulle urgenze delle persone e dei territori, successivamente tradotti in linguaggi performativi: movimento, voce, azione scenica, performance durational e narrazione poetica.
Il workshop si articola in tre principali aree di lavoro:
1. Training fisico e vocale – Tap into Urgency
Attraverso pratiche fisiche, vocali e improvvisazioni guidate, i partecipanti entreranno in uno stato performativo basato sulla presenza dinamica e sull’ascolto dell’impulso. Il training prende ispirazione dal lavoro di Jerzy Grotowski e dalle pratiche sviluppate da Daniela Marcozzi negli anni di ricerca artistica.
Il corpo verrà esplorato come luogo di percezione, trasformazione e accesso all’energia impulsiva, lavorando sulla relazione tra movimento, voce, emozione e ambiente esterno.
2. Embodiment delle urgenze
La seconda fase del lavoro sarà dedicata all’embodiment delle urgenze raccolte attraverso i sondaggi. Le risposte verranno esplorate attraverso tecniche performative che permettono di trasformare immagini, parole, emozioni e tensioni in materiale scenico condivisibile.
L’obiettivo sarà comprendere come un’urgenza individuale possa entrare in risonanza con dimensioni più ampie — culturali, ecologiche, politiche — e diventare esperienza collettiva.
3. Composizione performativa
Nella fase finale i partecipanti svilupperanno azioni, scene e composizioni individuali o collettive a partire dal materiale emerso durante il workshop. La composizione si costruirà in dialogo con il paesaggio del Po e con i luoghi scelti per la restituzione finale.
Creazione della performance site-specific a partire dalla distribuzione di sondaggi alla comunità.
Una parte centrale del progetto consiste nella raccolta di sondaggi anonimi rivolti alla comunità. Attraverso domande dedicate al tema dell’urgenza, i partecipanti raccoglieranno testimonianze, immagini, desideri, paure e riflessioni provenienti dalle persone del territorio e dalle proprie comunità di riferimento.
Le risposte raccolte costituiranno la materia drammaturgica e performativa del lavoro. Attraverso la metodologia On Urgency, le parole delle persone verranno trasformate in movimento, voce, azioni performative e composizioni site-specific.
La performance finale si svilupperà in due differenti luoghi collegati al territorio del Po e alle attività del festival. I luoghi saranno definiti successivamente, in base alla logistica del festival e ai contenuti emersi dai sondaggi. L’intenzione è quella di lavorare in due contesti differenti: uno maggiormente antropizzato e uno più naturale, entrambi in relazione con l’acqua e con il paesaggio fluviale.
A chi è indirizzato questo workshop
Ad artist* delle arti performative, musicist*, ricercatrici e ricercatori, artist* interdisciplinari, praticanti di discipline somatiche e a tutte le persone interessate alla relazione tra corpo, ecologia, comunità e performance.

Spazi di lavoro
Le sessioni giornaliere si svolgeranno negli spazi messi a disposizione da Teatro Nucleo e/o presso il Nucleo Garden, uno spazio composto da un capannone con un ampio giardino attiguo.
Alloggio
Per nove partecipanti è disponibile una struttura di accoglienza a offerta libera chiamata Nostra Signora Universale, situata a Mottatonda, a circa 40 minuti di auto dal teatro.
La struttura mette a disposizione:
- camere condivise con letti a castello
- cucina utilizzabile autonomamente per la preparazione dei pasti
- ogni partecipante dovrà portare le proprie lenzuola.
Eventuali ulteriori partecipanti potranno organizzarsi autonomamente presso strutture private a pagamento.

Workshop Description
The Urge of Being – Expedition is a residential workshop and site-specific performative research project conceived by Daniela Marcozzi, performance artist, director, and interdisciplinary researcher, founder of Marcozzi Contemporary Theater (Berlin) and of the cultural association M.A.R.E. Movimento Artistico Ricerca Ecologica.
The project originates from The Urge of Being practice, developed over the past ten years through a research process intertwining performing arts, ecology, embodiment neuroscience, and the biology of emotions.
At the center of the work lies the concept of urge: a vital and impulsive force that moves through the body, shapes our actions, and can become creative material, relationship, and transformation.
The workshop invites participants to explore the relationship between personal and collective urgencies — ecological, social, and political — questioning the role of performance as a form of listening, presence, and activism.
The process will unfold through studio work and site-specific practices in connection with the Po River territory, in dialogue with local spaces and communities.
The residential workshop is hosted by Teatro Nucleo in Ferrara, and the site-specific performances are part of Totem Festival 2026.
Artistic Contents
The work is based on the On Urgency methodology, developed by Daniela Marcozzi and Marcozzi Contemporary Theater. This methodology consists of collecting anonymous testimonies and questionnaires about the urgencies of people and territories, later translated into performative languages: movement, voice, scenic action, durational performance, and poetic narration.
The workshop is structured around three main areas of work:
1. Physical and Vocal Training – Tap into Urgency
Through physical and vocal practices and guided improvisations, participants will enter a performative state grounded in dynamic presence and the listening of impulse. The training draws inspiration from the work of Jerzy Grotowski and from the practices developed by Daniela Marcozzi throughout her years of artistic research.
The body will be explored as a place of perception, transformation, and access to impulsive energy, working on the relationship between movement, voice, emotion, and the external environment.
2. Embodying Urgencies
The second phase of the work will focus on embodying the urgencies collected through surveys. The responses will be explored through performative techniques that transform images, words, emotions, and tensions into shareable scenic material.
The aim is to understand how an individual urgency can resonate with broader cultural, ecological, and political dimensions and become a collective experience.
3. Performative Composition
In the final phase, participants will develop actions, scenes, and individual or collective compositions based on the material that emerged during the workshop. The composition process will evolve in dialogue with the Po landscape and with the locations selected for the final presentation.
Creation of the Site-Specific Performance Through Community Surveys
A central part of the project consists of collecting anonymous surveys from the local community. Through questions dedicated to the theme of urgency, participants will gather testimonies, images, desires, fears, and reflections from people living in the area as well as from their own communities of reference.
The collected responses will become the dramaturgical and performative material of the work. Through the On Urgency methodology, people’s words will be transformed into movement, voice, performative actions, and site-specific compositions.
The final performance will take place in two different locations connected to the Po territory and to the festival activities. The locations will be defined at a later stage according to the festival logistics and the contents emerging from the surveys.
The intention is to work in two contrasting contexts: one more urbanized and one more natural, both connected to water and the river landscape.
Who Is This Workshop For
The workshop is open to performing artists, musicians, researchers, interdisciplinary artists, practitioners of somatic disciplines, and anyone interested in the relationship between body, ecology, community, and performance.

Working Spaces
Daily sessions will take place in the spaces provided by Teatro Nucleo and/or at Nucleo Garden, a venue consisting of a warehouse space with a large adjacent garden.
Accommodation
For nine participants, accommodation is available on a donation basis at Nostra Signora Universale, located in Mottatonda, approximately 40 minutes by car from the theater.
The facility provides:

a kitchen available for self-catering

participants are required to bring their own bed sheets
Additional participants may arrange accommodation independently in private paid facilities.

Food and accommodation are not included in the fee (accommodation is donation-based at the mentioned facility or can be arranged independently).
