water tongue
Water Tongue is a performative practice that invites the performer to enter into dialogue with the visionary dimensions of nature through words, body, voice and images.
The practice begins with the observation of water, its movements, states, rhythms, dynamics, colors. By observing water directly, or through visual and sonic materials, performers encounter the movements of seas and oceans, rivers and streams, waves, currents, puddles, rain, or the water of everyday life. These observations become physical and imaginative impulses: a current can become a character, turbulence a relationship, suspension a state of being, a wave a voice.
In this practice, water is a code through which to read energetic narratives.
Performers allow water dynamics to generate narratives, characters, voices, words and forms of language that do not necessarily belong to an already known or codified linguistic system.
In this sense, Water Tongue is an attempt to create a relationship with what we cannot fully name or define in nature: monsters, giants, microorganisms, imaginary creatures, inner and outer voices, and other forms of presence that emerge through the encounter between the performer and the more-than-human world.
Water acts as a medium and a messenger. Its fluidity becomes a way of connecting the performer with a presence or energetic quality, allowing something from outside or within the body to take form. As water adapts to the body when we enter the sea, these presences can adapt to the performer’s body, voice and imagination.
how do we access the connection between ourselves and the larger systems of which we are part?
We have senses that allow us to perceive light, sound, temperature, pressure and touch. But do we have a specific sense for perceiving belonging? For perceiving an ecological or oceanic connection? For sensing the energetic and material relationships that sustain our existence?
Water Tongue approaches this gap not by trying to define a new sense, but by giving it an artistic articulation: a poetic and embodied grammar for a connection that may already exist, but for which we do not yet have a clear language.
crazy natural
Nature doesn't exist. Nature as something out of us doesn't exist. We are nature. Are we natural?
Are we natural enough?
Are we artificial?

artistic genealogy
The practice builds on three foundations of Daniela Marcozzi’s artistic research: The Urge of Being, the training Beyond the Narrative of the Five Senses, and several years of direct creative research in marine environments through sailing expeditions, encounters with cetaceans and sensory exploration at sea.
Water Tongue extends this methodology into a performative research where water becomes the mediator between the performer and the unknown, a way of listening to, embodying and giving form to forms of connection between the human body and the wider living world.
